On Sunday, the Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021 pageant took place and Pushpika De Silva was crowned the winner. However, as she was taking her victory walk on the ramp, the former titleholder Caroline Jurie stripped off her crown onstage and awarded it to the runner-up.

BBC quoted her saying, “There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and are divorced, so I am taking steps to make the crown go to second place.”

Here is the video of the incident:

According to DNA India, Mrs. De Silva who is separated and not divorced took to Facebook saying,

“There are a lot of single mums like me today who are suffering in Sri Lanka. This crown is dedicated to those women, those single mums who are suffering to raise their kids alone.”

She added that she suffered head injuries on stage and would take legal action for the “unreasonable and insulting” treatment meted out to her. The national director of Mrs. Sri Lanka World, Chandimal Jayasinghe, has confirmed that the crown will be returned to her saying,

“We are disappointed. It was a disgrace how Caroline Jurie behaved on the stage and the Mrs. World organisation has already begun an investigation on the matter.”
