From Lifting Firewood To Lifting Weights & Winning Gold, Map Mirabai Chanu’s Inspiring Journey

Sportspersons like Virat Kohli, Mary Kom, Sunil Chetri among others have proved right the term ‘from rags to riches’ with their dedication and hard work in their respective fields. Such personalities are not only making India proud at international levels but are also inspiring several young Indians to chase their dreams. One such sportsperson who is an epitome of inspiration is Mirabai Chanu.

Chanu stepped in the world of weight-lifting six years back by winning a silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 25-year-old went on to qualify the 2017 Rio Olympics followed by a clear win in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim, CA, United States, reports India Today.

Although she did not win any medal in Rio her phenomenal performance certainly won her immense praise, followed by which she also claimed gold in the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

She was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2018.

Ever since Mirabai has been making and breaking her own records in the world of weight-lifting like a boss. She bagged a Bronze in 49 kg Category of Clean and Jerk in 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships. 199 kg was her best ever weight that she lifted in the championship.

Recently, Mirabai broke her own record by lifting weights as heavy as 201 kgs in Clean and Jerk at National Weightlifting Championships held in Kolkata, reports TOI.

“The child is the father of the man,” said William Shakespeare and it seems a complete truth in the case of Mirabai. Her parents identified Mirabai’s strength long back in her childhood when they noticed her carrying bundles of firewood easily on her shoulders, reports ET. This was possibly the earliest display of strength by Mirabai and the rest is history!

We hope she soon adds another feather to her already decked up cap by winning gold in the forthcoming Olympics. Kudos to Mirabai for her talent! We hope she continues to script history in the coming years.
