Men Are Twice As Emotional As Women At Work, Likely To Quit When Angry, Says Study

Have you ever noticed how your male colleagues behave differently at work than their female colleagues? How men and women handle criticism differently and their general approach towards assignments is different?

According to a report by Standard UK, men are twice as emotional at their workplaces than women.

A study was carried out on 2,250 workers in the United Kingdom by Anglia Ruskin University on the basic behaviour of men and women at their workplaces.

One of the things which were found is that men were more likely to get emotional if they “weren’t heard” or were “criticised”.

Also, they were three times more likely to experience an “emotional event” if a project went over budget, if it missed a deadline, or it got cancelled.

According to Metro UK, when men get emotional at work, they are more likely to shout or even quit their jobs while women would mostly cry and carry on.

Another thing that the study showed was that people were more triggered by their colleagues than their assignments. 1 in 3 emotional outbursts is caused because of a colleague and 2 in 10 caused by a task.

“Men and women are socialised to display emotions differently, especially at work. Men are more likely to report experiencing emotions associated with power, such as anger or pride,” said Terri Simpkin, a senior lecturer in leadership and corporate education at Anglia Ruskin University.

“In fact, emotions and power are inextricably linked. Not being heard is congruent with lacking in status. Similarly, sadness is associated with a lack of power in social settings such as the workplace,” she added.

The final thing that was revealed is that nearly 60% of the subjects said that they couldn’t express their emotions freely at work. Many said that they “concealed their real emotions” with “a positive face” at work.

30% of the managers claimed that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. Many workers claimed that they fear being “judged” if they display emotions.

However, not everything is gloomy with this study, for 91% of the people said that overall they experienced joy the most at work. But the joy was closely followed by surprise, anger, sadness, disgust and fear.
