Ahmedabad Man Seeks Divorce After Claiming His Wife Has A Beard, Court Rejects His Plea

Marriage is a huge step in our lives because we’ve to start a family of our own. Now, in case it’s a love marriage, it’s fine and dandy because the people in question know and like each other. If it’s an arranged marriage, then the situation’s completely different and mostly tricky.

With the advent of matrimonial sites and social media, we do get an idea of what kind of life we’re marrying into. However, some families take the more “traditional” route during arranged marriages. Which means that the bride and groom can’t see each other’s faces until the night of marriage. And that apparently went wrong for one Ahmedabad man.

According to Ahmedabad Mirror, a man approached the court claiming that his wife’s appearance has changed drastically after their marriage. He said,

“When I saw Rupa for the first time, she was clean shaven with a lot of make-up. After seven days of our marriage, I went out of town for a work assignment. But when I returned and stayed with Rupa, I found beard on her face and realised that she sounds like a man.”

Rupesh (name changed for anonymity) claimed that Rupa’s (name changed for anonymity) parents didn’t allow him to see her before their marriage. He said that they had covered her face with a dupatta since it was tradition.

Word of these allegations reached Rupa’s in-laws and they apparently told Rupesh that they’ve to stay together because they’re married. However, Rupesh was not one to back down.

Considering how problematic the beard was for Rupesh, he had a huge dispute with Rupa regarding the matter. After that, things became so serious that the police had to be brought in. And finally, Rupesh decided to file a divorce application.

As the divorce application got the court involved, Rupa brought in her lawyer. He claimed that all of Rupesh’s allegations were baseless and false. In addition to that, Rupesh and his family were accused of asking for dowry and torturing Rupa physically and mentally.

Following these allegations, things went downhill for Rupesh, since he wasn’t present during his court hearings for one reason or the other.

The scales were tipped towards Rupa’s side because of two reasons. The first reason is because she was open to the concept of marriage. She was pragmatic as well, since she demanded alimony of ₹ 20,000/month in case of a divorce. The second reason is because Rupesh was absent during the hearings.

Both of these reasons worked against Rupesh and the court had to come to the conclusion of rejecting his divorce application. The court said that they couldn’t take Rupesh’s claims seriously because he and his lawyer were missing once the proceedings began.

Marriage is a life-long bond and one should get into it after making a thorough analysis of the person they’re marrying. Because getting out of it leads to complications that cannot be mended as there are a lot of legal and social factors playing around it. And as bizarre as Rupesh and Rupa’s case is, we hope they find common ground going forward.
