There Is No Soul In Songs Today – Lata Mangeshkar Speaks What All Of Us Have Been Thinking

Lata Mangeshkar has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and dozens of National Film Awards.

That’s why when a singer of such a stature says that the soul is missing in today’s songs, we and the whole industry together has to sit up and listen.

Speaking in an interview, Lata Mangeshkar emphasized how playback singing is all about voice acting. How the singer has to get into the character to give the song a soul.

“I would suggest to all the youngsters to understand the character, situation and the story behind the songs. That is when you can add soul to the rendition which, I think, is missing in today’s music.”

The 87-year-old nightingale said that the onus is on the singer to bring the soul into the music.

We live in an age where music directors are so lazy that they are content with rehashing good songs like ‘Humma Humma’ and feeding it to the youngsters of today.

Lata Mangeshkar speculated that this might be the reason youngsters today go back and listen to old songs.

“Perhaps that is why people still love to listen to retro songs, and new songs are going out of listeners’ memory faster.”

She then switched the conversation to the other aspects of her life.

Even after achieving everything a singer can achieve and garnering love from every corner of the country, she remains a humble person. She believes that it is the people’s love and not the trophy that she cherishes more.

“More than the trophy, it is the love and affection that people shower on me by listening to my songs years after years, that touches me.”

And just like most of us, she is a complete foodie. But due to her age and health issues, she is not able to eat spicy food. But she makes up for it by cooking delish food for her grandchildren.

All said and done, she remains one of the greatest singers India has ever produced. She is also a very kind hearted and genuine person.

Let’s just hope Bollywood takes her advice and improves the quality of the songs they are releasing.
