Last year, the #MeToo movement took over the United States of America and became the first step towards making workplaces free from sexual predators. Exactly an year later, the campaign has reached India and is steadily taking shape, thanks to the women who are fighting for their rights. However, as the damage done due to all these years of patriarchy is far bigger than that, Lady Gaga decided to touch upon the subject with a rousing speech.
According to News18, Lady Gaga attended the Elle’s Women in Hollywood event on Monday in an over-sized pantsuit. While most would’ve that it was just another one of her over-the-top dresses, Gaga revealed that it was much more than just a dress. She said,
“I tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics and the most beautiful silks in the world. To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach.”
However, she didn’t let that feeling take over her and fought it back with the question “What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood?”. And the answer that came to her was that,
“We are not just objects to entertain the world. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public. We women in Hollywood, we are voices… We have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced. In this suit, I felt like me today. In this suit, I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut.”
While the internal monologue that compelled Lady Gaga to wear the pantsuit was enough to empower thousands of women who feel the same way, she went a step further to motivate them. She said,
“As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back. Today I wear the pants.”

Lady Gaga is a hugely talented singer and she can spend the rest of her life portraying herself as just that. But instead, she’s sharing her vulnerabilities and using her platform to fight for what’s right. So, maybe we should do the same and go beyond our call of duty to make our society a better place for women and the upcoming generation.
