Triple Talaq, the practice of instant divorce among Muslim couples after the husband announces ‘talaq’ three times, was declared illegal in 2019 after the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act was passed. It was a significant step ahead for the country in terms of gender equality and women’s rights. However, even today, many Muslim men try to give instant divorce to their wives for bizarre reasons. A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur divorced his wife through triple talaq via video call because she shaped her eyebrows despite him asking her not to, reported Moneycontrol.
The couple have been married since January 2022. The husband works in Saudi Arabia. Recently, he was on a video call with his wife when he noticed that she had shaped her eyebrows. He got angry and questioned her why she did so. She responded by saying that he didn’t like the natural shape of her eyebrows and hence, she got them shaped better.
“You went ahead and shaped your eyebrows despite my objections. From today, I free you from this marriage,” the husband said and said ‘talaq, talaq, talaq’ while on video call.
The wife went on to file a police complaint and an FIR has been lodged against the husband, her mother-in-law and three others.
