I know we live in a developing country but when you come across articles like ’30 hottest photos of Badminton player Jwala Gutta’, that’s when you know something is seriously wrong with the kind of development you’re making!
It is no news that star women athletes have always been treated with misogyny and eyes of objectification but the recent boom of social media has somewhere aggravated the situation, bordering ‘cyber harassment.’
Recently, in an interview with Sportskeeda, Jwala Gutta, who happens to be country’s top-ranked doubles specialist in Badminton addressed these sexist standards that plague our society and her social media accounts.
The shuttler who has won India several accolades including medals at the Commonwealth games and Asian games opened up about how she deals with the perverse derogatory comments and body-shaming.
“They (trolls) fail to realise is that we are also normal human beings who want to look good. That doesn’t mean you add labels or prefixes to our name. We also have families, who might find such comments absolutely deplorable, just like theirs.”
The Arjuna awardee also stated that the lewd comments, however, doesn’t stop her from doing everything that she does and she couldn’t care less of what the haters think about her.
“If I look a certain way, it doesn’t mean I’m ‘fast’ or ‘active’, which are milder comments among the lot. It’s just a personal choice. So how does that make me ‘easy to get’, and all the other prefixes that are being attached?”
Jwala also commented on the double standards and hypocrisy that is pervasive where being a woman is tougher than being a sportsperson.
“A lot of the misogynistic comments that are directed towards me are from women, where they don’t agree with what I wear or make comments about me being available.”
All of this, in the age where we preach gender equality and sensitivity. And it only goes to show, how we have failed, collectively as a society!
