When it comes to desi marriages, you have to admit that patriarchy exists in a lot of the scenarios. For instance, a desi guy asked why parents let strangers count their daughter’s flaws in arranged marriages, or how some women revealed why they chose not to take their husband’s surnames post marriage.
Similarly, I once heard a friend’s mother refusing us for an all-girls Goa trip, by telling her that she can do the same with her future husband after marriage. At the time, it didn’t quite sit right with me.
A Twitter user who is an advocate recently shared screenshots of her conversation with her father questioning the saying that a woman is free to do whatever she likes only after marriage.
Recently my parents pulled a
"Get married and do whatever you like".
So, I thought of answering them through texts. pic.twitter.com/EBoz2LqnsQ— Swati K. (@mynameswatik) July 2, 2021
After her father supported the notion that he too only got freedom after marriage, she responded that one doesn’t have the right to snatch others’ freedom.
She further called it “non-debatable” as liberty is a birthright that exists regardless of a person’s marital status.
Many people applauded the girl for her response, pointing towards the fact that change often begins at home.
I really like your spirit of raising voice against injustice of any kind. You just explained how injustice starts to take shape in the society from our very own house on some innocent level.

Change begins from self and family. That’s really appreciable to see that you stand by your ideologies even when its your father.#Respect

Liberty is a birth right.
Between Life and Liberty I shall always choose Liberty. https://t.co/ianvp8eSax

She also responded to another man who questioned her beliefs. You go, girl!

I am an adult with my own agency. Neither my parents nor anyone else have any right to command me what to do with my personal life. They know my choice & they ought to respect it.
U can keep your mansplaining with you KID! He called me buddhu out of love, not to mansplain me.— Swati K. (@mynameswatik) July 2, 2021
