Kurtis Kaser was unloading corn on his farm when he accidentally stepped into a grainer machine. His foot got stuck in the machine, he tried to pull it out but the machine started pulling it in leaving his leg in a pool of blood.

“Stepped into the hopper in the little hole. It just sucked my leg in and I was trying to pull it out, but it kept pulling,” the 63-year-old Nebraska farmer, narrated the horrifying incident reports Huffington Post. “When it first happened, I remember thinking, ‘This ain’t good. This is not good at all,” he said.

Kaser, unfortunately, did not carry his mobile to the farm that day. He had only two options left with him:
1. Cry for help and wait for someone to spot him.
2. Cut off his own leg to escape the grain auger.

And, Kaser mustered up the courage to opt for the second option! He began sawing his leg with a small knife kept in his pocket. “I had my pocket knife in my pocket. I said, ‘The only way I’m getting out of here is to cut it off,’ so I just started sawing at it,” he recalled.

“When I cut some of the clothes and the meat, I could feel pain in my leg when I cut a nerve or something. Finally, whatever all was there, it let go and let me get out,” he said.

Kaser somehow managed to escape the farming machine and crawled back to his house which was 200 meters away from the place of accident. He then dialed 911 to seek police help and was immediately rushed to a hospital. After a week of treatment, Kaser is now back home dealing with the loss. He plans to get a prosthetic leg for himself once healed completely.

“I paid the price of being in a hurry and not paying attention, basically,” Kaser said.

Kaser, certainly, defines the spirit of life! His will and determination to live gave him the courage to cut off his own limb by his own hands. His courage and quick thinking saved his life!
