Indian Gymnast Dipa Karmakar Creates History & Qualifies For World Championship Finals

16 years ago, 6-year-old Dipa Karmakar participated in gymnastics for the first time with a flat foot. After getting her flat foot fixed, this girl has had a variety of success including becoming the first Indian female gymnast to win a Commonwealth medal.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Recently, she created history by becoming the first Indian to make the finals at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

It is not every day that an Indian’s name figures in sports like gymnastics. In a nation that doesn’t boast of world-class athletes, her achievement is extremely heartening and satisfying.

The 22-year-old from Agartala went for the difficult Produnova vault and scored 15.100 points on her first jump. She followed it with Tsukahara and scored 14.700 points on her second jump, eventually finishing 7th in the qualification standings.

Finishing 7th is not a mean feat for a girl at a competition which had 87 countries participating.

Tripura’s golden girl is indeed an inspiration to all the young generation female athletes of India. 🙂
