When it comes to progress, we’re all about crossing limits, overstepping boundaries and exceeding expectations. And none more seriously, and more literally, than Delhi Metro!
Yesterday, a driverless train from Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, which is slated for a Christmas inauguration, crashed through a wall at the Kalindi Kunj depot at around 3.40 pm.

Ouch! It looks like one of those American sci-fi movies stills, doesn’t it?
While people were bound to blame this incident on the train being driverless, Delhi Metro issued a statement quelling any such cause and explaining what might have actually happened.
Person who took charge of train from the maintenance staff also did not check brake and proceeded with the train up to the washing plant built on a ramp. While stopping at the ramp, since the brakes were not available, the train rolled back causing this incident: Delhi Metro

Basically, it was all human error.
MD, DMRC has ordered a high level inquiry into this incident by a committee of three officers. Prima facie it appears, to be case of human error and negligence& appropriate action will be taken after the inquiry: Delhi Metro

Jokes apart, people raised some major concerns about such an incident occurring again when there are people on-board. However, a Delhi Metro spokesperson assured people that his was highly unlikely.
According to Indian Today,
“Train movement inside the workshop area is done manually and is not operated through the [automated] signalling system. Therefore, such an incident taking place during passenger operations is NOT POSSIBLE.”
Guess, the Magenta Line and Delhi Metro took major inspiration from Ranbir Kapoor’s Bunny à la Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani:
Main udna chahta hoon, daudna chahta hoon, girna bhi chahta hoon … bus rukna nahi chahta!
