Renaming of cities in India is not something new. History dates this trend back to 1947, post India’s independence from the British rule. However, providing a city with a new name or a spelling is something that is still prevalent in the country. So, while we were busy fighting the pandemic, the Tamil Nadu government decided to rename some of its cities.
And out of the 1,018 places examined by the authorities, a majority of them have been either provided with a new name or a new spelling. According to The Hindu, the government order to rename cities came following an announcement made in the Assembly two years ago. It states that anglicised names of the areas be changed closer to their original names in Tamil.
You can't see these English names on boards elsewhere hereafter!

And according to it, the popular South Indian city Coimbatore has been rechristened as ‘Koyampuththoor’. Ambattur, an important industrial city has been renamed to ‘Ambaththoor.’ The smart city Vellore has also been renamed to ‘Veeloor’, among others.
Well, people were not pleased with the #NAMECHANGE and took to social media to express their disapproval:

Soon #Koyampuththoor started trending online with people expressing their disappointment with the new name of Coimbatore. Here’s what they said:
Doesn't TN Govt have more important things to attend to right now? Originally Kovanputhur, known as Kovai for centuries, anglicized as #Coimbatore – which worked well so far. What is this abomination of renaming it to Koyampuththoor? Tamilicising an Anglicized name? #ththoo!!! https://t.co/Kl1LCxxyCc
