Hundreds Of Doctors In Canada Are Protesting Cause They’re Paid Too Much. No Really!

Contrary to popular belief, apparently there’s such a thing as ‘being paid too much.’ Hey, my first reaction was disbelief as well but the following piece of news helped me reach the conclusion and I have a feeling it will do the trick for you too.

How am I so confident? Well, I’ll let the facts do the talking.

In a first, over 500 doctors in Canada are protesting their own pay hike, reports CNBC. The group, known as Médecins Québécois pour le Régime Public (MQRP) signed a public letter stating that they get paid enough.

“We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations.”

Reportedly, the petition which was signed on 24th February was signed by 213 general practitioners, 184 specialists, 149 resident medical doctors and 162 medical students who want the money used for their raises to be returned to the system instead.

Not just that.

They have expressed displeasure in accepting the raise because there are nurses and patients who are still struggling. The letter further reads,

“These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health. Contrary to the Prime Minister’s statements, we believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Quebec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end.

We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec.”

“The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our remuneration,” it goes on.

In fact, Dr Isabelle Leblanc, President, MQRP told CBC news that the raise is the last thing that they need right now.

“If our colleagues are happier, if our patients are getting better care, we’ll all be winners, and it’s not an increase in pay that will do that.”

Wow. I’m not sure if I should it is the right comparison but I’m tempted nonetheless- Canada is the Rahul Dravid of countries! Are you listening, India?
