A.R. Rahman Gives A Classy Reply To The Fatwa Issued Against Him

Recently, there is so much controversy related to AR Rahman being issued a Fatwa by a Muslim group. And AR Rahman has now responded.

But before that, let’s see what actually the controversy is.

All of this started with the renowned Iranian director, Majid Majidi’s film Muhammad: The Messenger of God was released.

The movie’s plot:

Set in the 6th century, the story revolved around the story of Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Majid had worked diligently for the film with many historians and archeologists.

The music of the film was given by A.R Rahman.

The controversy:

Muhammad Akhtar, the chief mufti of Mumbai, initiated the fatwa against Mr. Majidi, Mr. Rahman, and other co-workers of this film.

Here’s what Saeed Noori, the chief of Raza Academy (a group that calls upon Muslims to rise to the true glory of Islam and follow the pristine teachings of Ahle Sunnah Wa Jamaah) said:

”We are against the title. People may use it in a bad manner if they don’t like the film, which will mean an insult to the Prophet. The actors have charged money to act in the film and they may have a dubious character in real life. How can we Muslims allow such things to happen?”

That most of the members of the film crew were Muslims was also pointed out. For that, Mr. Noori said that because of that, it becomes more imperative to take this action so that they realize their mistake.

How does A.R Rahman comes in the picture?

The Raza Academy had planned to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, to demand a ban on this film in India.

Also, they wanted to file a case against A.R Rahman because he allegedly hurt the feelings of Muslims.

A.R Rahman responds to this:

He finally sought to defuse the controversy surrounding the fatwa by uploading an image on his Facebook page and explaining his point of view. He has also generously quoted the verses from the Quran. Here is a summary of what he said:

1. He begins by making a straightforward declaration that he is not a scholar of Islam.

2. He points out that he was not the one who directed the movie and he has just composed the music and that he won’t explain the reason behind this as they are based on personal spiritual reasons.

3. Having said that, he says that the music was composed in good faith and with no intention of causing offense.

4. Further explaining his point of view, he believed that because of this movie, people will know about Prophet through the audio-visual medium, which will help them broaden their understanding.

5. He bats for religious freedom in India by saying that he is fortunate to live in India where religious freedom is practiced.

6. He also offered a path of peace by quoting – ”Today there is a blur between the real world and the virtual world and I have been taken aback to see that, for some years now, unethical, unacceptable and unkind remarks are made online concerning the Holy Prophet.”

You can see the whole post by A.R Rahman over here.

With this, I believe that he has proved his stance. But what remains to be seen is the outcome of this unvarnished reply.
