Rajkummar Rao‘s ‘Newton’ was declared India’s official entry to Oscars 2018 and our excitement knew no bounds. Even the masses, both on and off social media were ecstatic and proud to see Rajkummar reach heights, he so rightly deserves. Not to mention the piece of cinematic brilliance that is Amit V Masurkar directed, ‘Newton.’
However, shortly after it was lauded in waves of adulation, the tides turned into a sea of allegations and contemplations.
I am talking about the claims that ‘Newton’ is ‘inspired’ or ‘copied’ from the Iranian film, ‘Secret Ballot.’ It was alleged that the film has uncanny resemblances in the plot, which revolves around an honest polling officer and the voting day in a remote place.
But that the claims didn’t stop supporters at anything. And amongst many (including yours truly), Anurag Kashyap stood his ground to defend the film and the creative field of arts. He took to Twitter and wrote,
1. Initially, it was happiness.
That day when you wake up to the news that a deserving film makes a deserving box office .. Newton Shines .. super happy..

2. But it soon turned into THIS!
"Newton" is as much a copy of "Secret Ballot" as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale

3. WORD
Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than rest of us do in a lifetime.

Not just that, Anurag being the man he is, went on to prove the above. How?
Well, he reached out to Marco Muller, producer of ‘Secret Ballot’ and got his quote on it. He even shared the screenshot of a conversation with Muller on FB which stated that ‘Newton’ is not plagiarised.
While folks who have watched both the movies can tell them apart, Anurag’s kind gesture puts all the rumours and claims to rest and how! Thank you, Anurag Kashyap. We, the cinephiles, owe you one!
