It’s all over the news- every channel, every website, and every tweet is about Salman Khan. The reason why #SalmanVerdict is trending needs no explanation either – the actor has been charged with culpable homicide and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Here’s all you need to know about the hit and run case:
1. The accident took place 13 years ago – on September 28, 2002
2. He was accused of running over five people sleeping on a pavement outside a bakery in Bandra in his white Toyota Land Cruiser, killing one, and injuring four.

4. Salman Khan was not carrying his driving license at the time of the incident
5. His driver testified that he was the one driving, and not Salman. The prosecution alleged that the driver had taken money to give a false testimony. The driver, Ashok Singh, may face charges of perjury.

6. Witnesses:
A constable attached to Mr Khan’s security detail said in his statement to police that the drunk actor lost control of the car while driving at about 55 miles per hour. “The people were sleeping on the footpath. Salman and (his cousin) Kamaal ran away from the spot.”
One of the sleeping labourers injured in the accident said in his statement that “Salman was so drunk he fell. He stood but he fell again and then he… ran away.”
7. The driver testified in court that he had been behind the wheel, and that the crash occurred after the front left tyre burst, making steering and braking difficult.
8.  Salman had told the court that he was not under the influence of alcohol on the night of the accident. But Judge DW Deshpande found him guilty on the charge of culpable homicide.
“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

10. Until recently, he was shooting for some new films; An investment of about Rs 200 crore is riding on him.
11. Soon after the judgement, the actor’s lawyers even claimed that Khan is suffering from Trigeminal neuralgia.

12. According to reports, Salman Khan’s lawyers have already applied for bail in the Bombay high court.
