Blogger’s Thread About Unwanted Pregnancies Being 100% Men’s Fault Is Going Viral

If you’re wondering why lately Twitter threads on women’s reproductive rights are on the rise, you can attribute it to the instating of a new Supreme Court judge in the United States. POTUS Donald Trump has nominated a conservative federal judge Brett Kavanaugh for the position, which has now opened up dialogue on what the latter’s stand on abortion laws would be.

However, while it may be relevant to the West, the dialogue on women’s reproductive rights and body autonomy is a must all over the world. Particularly, in countries like India, where the lack of proper and open sex education causes unplanned pregnancies and birth control is still a taboo subject to talk about.

A blogger on Twitter, @designmom, has written a rather impressive thread where she makes a blunt statement that might ruffle lots of feathers at first glance.

Sure, the thread is rather TL;DR. But believe me, both men and women need to read and understand the issues surrounding abortion and birth control that Gabrielle discusses in the thread that has now gone viral.

Her claim? That men are a 100% responsible for unwanted pregnancies.

Whoa! I’m sure you’re a little taken aback with the blatant generalisation. But Gabrielle is prepared with her arguments.

“Women can only get pregnant about 2 days each month. In theory, a man could cause 1000+ unwanted pregnancies in just one year.”

Let that sink in!

What’s more, while women’s fertility lasts for only a few years, men can father offspring until their final days.

Of course, then there’s the matter of birth control. Gabrielle goes on to point out the flaw in that plan.

The thing about birth control is that it comes with side-effects.

“And as a society, we really don’t mind if women suffer, as long as it makes things easier for men.”

But when it comes to birth control options for men, there options are much less painful. For examples, a reversible procedures like vasectomy or simply, condoms!

Alas, there’s a catch and you can blame men’s comfort once again for this roadblock!

“Men regularly choose to put women at massive risk by having non-condom sex, in order to experience a few minutes of slightly more pleasure.”

Then there’s also the ‘pull out method’…

But again, that’s not something men are too keen on doing, even if it helps the women.

Gabrielle further explains how orgasms feature in this entire scheme of things. Again here, the men seem to be the one driving the wagon straight to pregnancy town.

What does this ultimately prove? That a woman’s need for pleasure is not what makes her pregnant. No sir! It is in fact entirely the man’s need for pleasure that does the trick.

Her next set of arguments are on the abortion front, and how the patriarchy has always denied women the right to their bodies, while also shaming them for unwanted pregnancies.

However, what they don’t realise is that they, in fact, are the real root cause of the problem.

She asks a very important question: What would it take for men to accept their responsibility in the whole unwanted pregnancies situation?

To further simplify this, Gabrielle employs a rather excellent analogy about temporary pleasure and… food!

Her final tweets are powerful, and drive the point home with the impact that they should. Don’t risk the lives of women for the sake of your pleasure.

The viral thread has been receiving rave kudos and endorsements from not just women but also men, who realise that this dialogue is important and the need of the hour.

Of course, not everyone agrees with all the points of arguments. There are many who have vehemently disagreed with Gabrielle’s views.

But the stellar arguments quite effectively present in favour of women’s reproductive rights and abortion have been much appreciated by many, including celebrities and noted authors.

Here’s one from Jojo Moyes (author of the book ‘Me Before You’ that was turned into a movie featuring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin):

From acclaimed American author Jodi Piccoult of ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ fame:

‘One Tree Hill’ alumni, actor Sophia Bush also acknowledged it to be an incredible read.

It’s amazing that Twitter is opening up dialogues about such relevant topics in such a positive manner.
