She was born in a small town in Punjab and always wanted to become a pilot. Yes, she was a kid who dreamt of flying really high, when the world told her not to. And, boy, did she fly.
Meet Anny Divya, the world’s youngest pilot who flies Boeing 777, like a boss. Anny was born in Pathankot, where her father was posted. Later, they moved to Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, where she did her schooling from.
In a male dominated society, women pilots are a handful. But, Anny dreamt of being one and of not taking the doctor-engineer career route. Luckily, her parents supported her but she faced resistance from her relatives.
That didn’t stop her, at all. She braved it all and went ahead. At the age of 17, she got into the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA), the flying school in Uttar Pradesh.
There she faced challenges of her own. While she could read and write well in English, Divya was very conscious of her English-speaking skills. She was made fun of, too. She honed her skills and overcame that. She told Hindustan Times,
By the age of 19, Divya’s training was complete and she bagged a job with Air India.
Surprisingly, in India, there are more women pilots than the world and that’s quite awesome.
“I am proud to say that India has taken lead over rest of the world including developed countries, when it comes to number of female pilots. In India, 15% woman fly as airline pilots, while globally, it is an average of approximately 5%.”
Living by the work hard mantra, Anny Divya urges all appreciate parental support and never give up on one’s dreams.
Now, isn’t that pretty cool? The skies are her playground and she soars high, literally.
