19-Year-Old Assamese ‘Gully Boy’ Goes Viral For Rapping In Protest Of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

All of us are head-banging to the beats of ‘Gully Boy‘ and patiently waiting for its release. But while we connect with and enjoy the brilliantly composed rap songs of the movie album, there are real gully boys out there addressing social issues that need to be heard.

Recently, a 19-year old boy named Rahul Rajkhowa posted a video on YouTube in which he raps about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and how it affects the North-East.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill changes the definition of illegal immigrants and proposes citizenship to illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who’re either Hindu, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Buddhists or Parsis and have been living in India for a minimum of 6 years.

The North-East, especially Assam and Meghalaya, have been on protest ever since.

They believe that the bill will make a dumping-ground out of the North-East for Bangladeshi Hindus, hence compromising on their cultural identity.

If the bill is put into action, it will pave the way to further unemployment, overpopulation, and inter-caste and/or religious riots to name a few.

Rahul Rajkhowa’s video bashes the government for its lack of sincerity.

He talks about how they couldn’t save 15 miners stuck in an illegal coal mine but want to help foreign citizens. He points out how in different areas North-East is going to suffer if the bill is put to action, and it is bound to give you shivers down your spine!

After the video went viral, people from all over the country have been showing their support, hoping that the government will realise and rectify the plight that is about to fall on the North-East.

The country needs more guys like him to come forward and give the government a reality-check! And sometimes, a rap by a local is all it takes to spark a revolution.
