The Indian education system, unfortunately, is far from being ideal. From age-old syllabi that teache us very little about modern-day challenges to the yardsticks that rate a child (based on home much he/she has been able to mug up and produce in a span of 3 hours), the Indian academia needs ramifications now, more than ever!

In fact, not just the academia and people within the circuit, the need of the hour also calls for changes in ministers and officers who are just like their set system- flawed! Let me tell you why (and how).

Uttarakhand education minister, Arvind Pandey recently paid a surprise visit to Dehradun’s Mahila Inter College and the clip of him asking some ‘basic’ questions to a teacher has gone viral.

According to News 18, Pandey entered a class in which a female teacher was teaching science. He then took it upon himself to test her knowledge, but somewhere along the way he changed the rules of arithmetic.

He wanted to know how much would two negative signs add up to. So he went upto the board and wrote ‘(-) + (-) = what?’ While teacher gave the correct answer, which was minus (-), the minister was in no mood to listen.

uttarakhandBTW, this was after he heckled her for an answer in front of the entire class. According to the minister, (-) + (-) in chemistry is (-) but it in maths the equation changes to (-) + (-) = (+). Absurd doesn’t even cut it!

Not just that, the man of the moment even asked the teacher the most ridiculous question anyone could have…

That’s right, her asked the name of the chapter of the book that was lying on the table. Before leaving the classroom, he even warned the teacher,

“I am sparing you because you are a woman.”

If you don’t believe me, watch this video.

While the the outrage at his behaviour and the way he treated the teacher has just begun, the entire episode speaks volumes about state of the education system in our country. And dare I say how!
