MTV’s Show Featuring A Lesbian Kiss Can Be A Redefining Moment For Indian Television

After The United States Of America legalised gay marriage in June this year, there have been a lot of discussions, debates and arguments about LGBT rights in India. Although some people made sense, and some didn’t, the important point was that people were talking about the issue openly. In a country like ours where such topics have been a taboo, this was a big step ahead.

Recently, MTV took a bold step in order to support the LGBT community and break all stereotypes against them. A show called ‘The Big F’ which focuses on the forbidden fantasies, featured a lesbian kiss on national television.

What was the episode about?

The episode ‘I kissed a girl’ is about a young fashion designing student Sharmistha, who is confused about her sexuality, and trying to live as per the ‘norms’ of the big world. She is constantly mocked and ridiculed for not being ‘normal’. But, when she meets Madhurima, she accepts the fact that she has been living in denial and is attracted to women.

Why is a normal desire labelled as ‘forbidden fantasy’?

Yes, the concept of homosexual romance being talked about under the label of ‘forbidden’ did annoy me a bit, but the fact that is is being talked about is commendable.

MTV, we sincerely appreciate your attempt to make people understand that such desires are absolutely normal. Although not perfect, it certainly is a praiseworthy effort.

Let’s hope this episode leads to a redefining moment on Indian television. Cheers!
