How many of us feel gratitude towards people for even the tiniest thing that they do for us? Most of the times we take things for granted and forget to say even a simple thank you for all that is done to bring us relief!
But LaShay is not like the majority. She has decided to honour her rescuer with the sweetest of gestures.
LaShay Brown, 14, who is lovingly called the “Katrina Girl” took, Master Sergeant Mike Maroney, the US Airforce Member who saved her during the Hurricane Katrina (2005) to her high school dance.

Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 2000 people and is one of the most traumatising disasters in the American history.
When LaShay was 3-years-old, Maroney and his specialist team rescued her family from their flooded home. This is the award-winning picture featuring LaShay and Maroney which came to symbolise the rescue mission.
Mr. Maroney used to carry this photograph with him on his missions to Afghanistan and Iraq while he dealt with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
2 years ago, Mr. Maroney started an online campaign with the hashtag #FindKatrinaGirl and finally met LaShay. Mr. Maroney told ‘People‘ that he is going to the ball because,

“I’m going because I would do anything to repay the hug to LaShay and her family. They mean as much to me as my own.”
Mr. Maroney plans to retire from the Air Force and mentor young kids for battlefield missions. And LaShay has been inspired by Mr. Maroney and has joined Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), a program sponsored by the US Armed Forces.
Such a sweet gesture by this young girl. LaShay sure did pay a befitting tribute to this brave man!
