Atheist (n): a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.Â
Openly calling yourself an atheist in India is like willing to walk on pieces of glass infected with a virus. I’m not saying that you’ll get killed for it, but it’s a sure-shot thing that you’ll get judged by people who are half-informed, who are plenty in number.
Following are the things you face being an atheist among people who aren’t.
1. You’re prepared for the judgmental looks from people when you tell them you’re an atheist
*Stares at you like you’re a unicorn*
2. And some of them will simply be in denial about your choice
“Nahi nahi. Aisa ho hi nahi sakta.” What?
3. Some will inevitably start an argument over ‘who created the earth’ and ‘who created you and me’
Let me introduce you to a word, buddy. It’s called Science.
4. No to mention other ridiculous questions like, “What is the purpose of your life then?”
Hmm. Need to think about that, because clearly my life has no purpose now.
5. People will think you’re a badass for not believing in God
They also happen to think that you’re a unicorn.
6. And some will also call you pretentious, because they think it’s a ‘cool’ thing to be known as an atheist
Ugh, please.
7. When you prefer not to visit a place of worship, you’ll be called disrespectful
“Where have all your values gone?”
8. And if by any chance, you mention your religious views to the elders of the family, the repercussions are the worst
Watch as your grandparents tell you that the ‘new generation is doomed’ and ‘the internet has ruined you’. Okay then.
9. When you do find someone who has the same viewpoint as you, your faith in humanity is restored a little
Finally. Someone who gets it.
10. You will also get retorts when you use phrases like “Oh my God”
So, by that logic, are you talking to shit when you accidentally say, “Oh shit”?
11. You get yelled at when you don’t follow practices like not eating non-vegetarian food on certain days of the week
But you do it anyway.
12. Because you’ve faced situations mentioned above, you prefer not to talk about your religious views
13. But, when it’s needed, you have all the information to kick the other person’s ass when it comes to reasoning
Although, most of the time, you’re all about live and let live. Because that’s how it should be.
