After 16 Relentless Years Of Fasting, Irom Sharmila Is Going To Break Her Fast On 9th August

The Armed Forces Special Powers Act gives sweeping powers to the military to take any action without the worry of getting pulled up for it. This has led them to become brazen and brutal with many cases of fake encounters being reported.

Irom Sharmila, the Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been fasting since November 2000 for over 500 weeks will finally end her fast on August 9th.

 

She has not had a single morsel of food or a sip of water in the past 16 years, and has been fed through a plastic tube that goes into her stomach through her nose.

 

She has been protesting against the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) that has been enforced in Manipur.

Her resolve is so strong, she has seen her mother only ONCE in the past 16 years, as she fears that her presence will break her resolve.

“Will break my fast as Govt failed to give any positive response,will fight elections to resolve issues.”

She wants to end the fast in the hopes that she will run for elections and change the system by representing her people.
