“11 Bankers Died Due To Stress.” Bank Officers Union Wants RBI Governor To Resign

It’s no news that demonisation has divided the nation into sects that are still fighting over the implications of the note ban. Nor are the serpentine lines and queues in front of bank and ATMs. However, have you ever imagined the plight of the bank officials and employees who have been dealing with angry customers, putting in 12 hours (or more) of work and working holidays?!

We recently told you about a bank official who was at the verge of breaking down at the hands of inconvenience faced by commoners. But the figures that have just come in, are telling us a different story and it will break your heart!

According to an Indian Express report, 11 bank officers have died in the last 12 days due to stress and exhaustion. D Thomas Franco, senior Vice President of All India Bank Officers Confederation, has claimed the numbers.

The Confederation represents over 2.5 lakh senior officers from all nationalised, old-generation private sector, cooperative and regional rural banks in India.

“People are crying at bank counters. Eleven bank officers have died due to stress. An average bank officer has been working up to 16-18 hours.

Officers in the ranks of joint custodian in the currency administration cells in banks are the most affected. Many of them couldn’t even claim a half a day’s leave after working 18 hours for 11 consecutive days.”

Thomas however, feels that the major lapse is on the part of the Reserve Bank of India and its Governer Urjit Patel. The leader has also called for the resignation of the Governor for creating ‘havoc’ in the Indian economy.

“PM Narendra Modi nor Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is an economist. We have economists in RBI to take the right decisions on matters relating to economy and people’s lives.

The present governor has utterly failed in his role by taking a crucial economic decision without planning, which has brought havoc to the nation’s economy and lives of the majority.”

The demonisation drive has taken a toll on the health of several other bank employees and the bank officer’s union believes that the present Governor of the RBI is morally responsible for it!

Amidst all the blame game, we just hope the situation gets better over time.
