Bangalore Police To Arrest Parents Of Under-age Drivers. Will Seize Vehicle & License.

Unlicensed, underage motorists are a big threat to the already worsening traffic condition in our country. Even parents of such teenagers have no qualms in providing vehicles to their unlicensed kids at an early age. Such blatant disregard to the traffic rules leads to thousands of road accidents every year!

Bangalore police, in an attempt towards curbing the menace of underage motorists on the streets has started a drive in which the PARENTS of underage kids driving a two or four-wheeler will be arrested.  Around 30 such cases against parents of underage motorists have already been filed in the past few days.

Statement from a Senior traffic official says : “We are planning to recommend to the regional transport offices (RTOs) to cancel licences of such parents. The worst part is when children take two-wheelers out during nights. They gather in groups and start racing or performing stunts. So it’s time to put an end to this menace. Recently, the High Court of Karnataka has asked the police to book parents for minors riding/driving. Under section 184, parents can be sent to jail for six months or fined up to Rs 1,000, or both.”

The police have identified some areas where teenagers go for rides during night time. According to Additional Commissioner of Police(Traffic) MA Saleem ” They start after 10 pm. They perform stunts and resort to racing. So we have started a drive to stop this menace.”

The police have resorted to this stringent approach as the minors cannot be booked under the law, so they have decided to book their parents. “We are going to seize the vehicle when minors are caught riding/driving. We will call the owner of the vehicle (a parent, in most cases) and seize the driving licence and vehicle’s registration certification book until the case is over.”
