And now, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha notified that India will witness its first batch of women fighter pilots on June 18 this year.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Women in Armed Medical Corps‘ in New Delhi on account of International Women’s Day, Arup Raha told that 3 women have volunteered to join the fighter stream.

They are undergoing training as of now and once that’s complete, they will undergo advanced jet training and proceed to regular squads.

Here’s what Arup Raha said:

As of now three women trainees have volunteered to join the fighter stream. They are under the second phase of their training. Once they complete their training and are at par with their male colleagues and the passing out parade is scheduled on June 18th.

He further stated that he was incredibly happy with Defense Ministry’s finally approving women joining the IAF as fighter pilots.

The Defence Minister, Manohar Parikar, lauded the efforts of Arup Raha who was instrumental in the proposal of inducting women fighter pilots in the IAF.

Such a welcoming change, isn’t it? It challenges the age-old stereotype that only men can be successful fighter pilots.

Salute to women power! 🙂
