A Chinese Woman Gets Diagnosed With A Rare Condition Where She’s Unable To Hear Men

A woman in China has been diagnosed with a type of rare hearing loss condition. She is able to only hear the voice of women, not men.

The patient, identified as Chen, had slept the night before with ringing in her ears and nausea believing that a good sleep will solve the problem.

When she woke up in the morning, she found herself unable to hear what her boyfriend was saying. She then went straight to the hospital.

Her symptoms were opposite to that of other common forms of hearing loss and the doctors were confused.

Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, a specialist, took Chen’s treatment into her own hands. She discovered that Chen was suffering from a condition called ‘reverse-slope hearing loss‘ or ‘low-frequency hearing loss’. This meant that Chen could only hear sounds of high frequency.

“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn’t hear him at all” – Dr. Xiaoqing.

Since a woman’s voice is usually high pitched than that of a man, Chen could only hear women.

According to reports, this condition occurs to one in almost 13,000 patients with hearing problems.

Dr. Xiaoqing said often stress, fatigue and sleep deprivation lead to such a condition. It may also be genetical.

This may not be a condition that most of us are familiar with. Hence, when the internet learned about this, they had opinions which needed to be poured!

The ENT specialist revealed that Chen needs to undergo treatment quickly and is expected to fully recover soon.
