Telangana Police Station Creates “Child-Friendly Corners” So That Kids Feel Safe There

On the occasion of ‘Bal Diwas‘, a day dedicated to children, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and Rachakonda Police Commissionerate joined hands to inaugurate Telangana’s first ‘child- friendly’ police station.

According to The Hindu, the Rachakonda Medipally station has “child-friendly corners” with books, games, beds and water coolers that make for a safe environment for juvenile delinquents as well as kids accompanying their parents.

CEO of BBA Samir Mathur was quoted saying, “child-friendly police stations play a vital role in ensuring that every child has proper and timely access to justice. These police stations promise a facilitating environment and also encourage higher reporting of crimes relating to children.”

The station was inaugurated by 7-year-old D. Ishan whose dream is to become a cop when he grows up. And the chief guest was Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.

The ceremony included a training session where the cops were apprised of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) guidelines. NDTV reports that 200 students from nearby schools were invited and a special event was organized to sensitize them about the issue of missing children.

We hope that other police stations in the country follow suit so that crimes against children get reported and solved following proper procedures.
