Student Asked To ‘Dress Like A Man’ After He Turned Up In College In A Top & Shrug

Even if you have understood the fact that people should be left alone to decide what clothing they want to wear irrespective of their genders, you will have at least one person in your acquaintance who will never understand this basic concept.

It’s very difficult for them to break free from the constraints that define what men and women in society should do. Freedom of choice and expression comes into the picture according to their own convenience.

And it’s because of these people that students like Pulkit Mishra have to hide their identities and not live their lives the way they want to.

Taking to social media, this student shared how he was barred from entering his college because of the clothes he was wearing.

“I wore this outfit to college today. I arrived at the main gate of college with one of my friend. One of the guard noticed me and his face expressions changed all at once. He called for other guards and 4-5 guards stopped and surrounded me. I got anxious. They asked me for my ID card, so I showed it to them. Then they asked me about my outfit that why was I wearing that “feminine” outfit.”

For the guards, it was ‘weird’ to see a guy wearing a top and a shrug that is only supposed to be worn by females. They also reprimanded him saying that he should dress ‘like a man’. Responding to them, he said:

“I replied that it is my choice, I could wear anything. So they said that’s not allowed in college, you are a boy so you cannot wear that. They added that only girls can wear that and you should dress up “like a man”.”

Mishra was convinced that they won’t let him in. Hence, he asked them if he can wear that shrug completely on his shoulders. But his off-shoulder shrug wasn’t the problem here.

“They specifically had a problem with the thing that I am a man, so I should not wear that whole outfit. Some passing students stopped by to see the whole scene and I felt really embarrassed. Guards didn’t let me enter the college.”

Despite wasting a lot of time and energy explaining the guards, Mishra couldn’t attend his first lecture. Therefore, he called one of his friends and asked for a shirt to cover that outfit.

“As I was waiting for my friend, guards pointed at me from very far away and they were having a conversation about me. I felt disgusted. As soon as my friend arrived with a shirt, I removed that shrug and wore that shirt, but I didn’t close the button. Guards again stopped me and didn’t let me enter the college until I closed all buttons. I felt frustrated.”

Despite this turn of events, when Mishra crossed path with the guards inside the college, they gave him their unsolicited gyan that “Ladkiyo ke kapde ladkiyo par hi shobha dete hain.”

“In 3rd period, I went to library for some work with my friends. That same guard/worker was there. He again pointed to me and asked, “You changed your look?” So I said, “Yes, bcoz you were not letting me enter”. Then he said “Ladkiyo ke kapde ladkiyo par hi shobha dete hain, tum ladke ho to tumhe ladke jaise kapde hi pehnne chahiye.”

The irritated student then calmly pointed out to them that it’s his choice. Moreover, if his parents and the faculty members of the college didn’t have a problem then who is he to judge him?

“I felt irritated at that moment but said to him very calmly, “Anyone can wear anything! There’s no gender in clothes”. So he said “Nhi nhi, hota hai”. I asked him “If my parents don’t have any problem with all this, why are you having so many problems? Even any faculty member didn’t point me for my any outfit, so who are you to judge?” And then I left.”

People online were irked on hearing about his ordeal and lent support to Mishra.

It’s sickening to see such a mentality prevail in society. But kuch toh log kahenge! Hence, just like this guy rooting to normalize watching men in skirts, we shouldn’t be affected by the ‘log kya kahenge’ ideology. You do you!
