Female Student Allegedly Sexually Harassed At Chennai’s SRM University, Huge Protests Follow

It is a matter of utmost shame, that the country of India has been declared as the most unsafe place for women in this entire world. And with brutal cases of rape, sexual harassment, and physical abuse increasing at an alarming rate, freedom of women in this country remains a crumbling illusion.

This brings us to an awful incident that took place at the popular SRM University in the outskirts of Chennai, where a young student of the institution had to go through the most traumatic minutes of her life.

According to the statements given by a third-year software engineering student, a second-year undergraduate student of the university was sexually tormented by a male sanitation worker inside the women’s hostel lift. The disgraceful episode took place at 3 pm on Thursday afternoon when the man masturbated in front of the girl, following which, she reported to the authorities.

According to India Today, the students have not received proper support from the University despite the case being one of paramount importance. If the students are to be believed, the hostel warden with whom the girl informed about the issue intentionally delayed access to the CCTV footage of the elevator and the filing of a complaint by two hours.

However, the director of the prestigious university had a rather shocking take on the matter. According to the students, the director responded casually to the incident stating “things happen to girls because they are north Indians who dress dirty, and smoke and drink”. The student added,

“The employee was identified by the student in the CCTV footage. However she was asked to stay mum about the incident by the authorities.”

In a bid to stand against such heinous crimes, the students of the SRM University have come down to the streets and taken over social media with a massive protest. Expressing their anger against the reluctant attitude and lack of justice at the institution, the students raised their voices significantly against the concern.

SRM University Vice-Chancellor, Sandeep Sancheti, assured the students of proper investigation into the case. According to The Indian Express, the protests were brought to an end after the university promised to take the required actions.

“Students are discussing with us. Whatever the matter is, it will be taken care of. If there is a matter, it will be inquired.”

Though no complaints have been registered yet, the matter remains one of absolute humiliation and the accused should be punished, if found guilty.
