Sona Mohapatra Just Called Coldplay “Some Soppy Firang Band” In A Fierce Rant. Do You Agree?

Sona Mohapatra.

The fiery singer and composer, is famous for her different, yet extremely soothing, earthy voice. What you should also know about the lady, whose live shows are said to be a revelation, is that she is quite direct and candid when it comes to speaking her mind.

Sona Mohapatra reacted to the Bollywood actors joining Coldplay on the stage instead of deserving musicians and writers in a fierce rant on Facebook and bared all her anger out.

Composers & some who can’t be called that, & then of course ‘actors’, ‘DJ’s’ & going by the last 10 days in Mumbai, even the milkman in the basti next door, everyone is with a microphone on a poster or some kind of stage. Being a ‘singer’ nay ‘rockstar’ trendy hai!
Of course, many of our ‘singers’ rather be ‘actors’ on stage, they move their lips & pretend they’re singing & style aur fashion main koi ‘rockstar’ sey kam nahin, sirf live gaana bhool gaye hain.
Let’s not forget the brave film producers & accompanying eco-system that rather regurgitate & promote an old old song, than create a new one, to ‘reinvent’ it, all you need is to shove it with some inane, puerile nursery rhyme like rap, preferably with a Punjabi posing like he’s just arrived from the ‘hood’ & voila, this is supposed to get bums on the theatre seats? Short cut ka plan accha hai & yet that isn’t working that well either is it?
Latest khabar is that some soppy western band is gracing our shores for the ’cause’ of ‘poverty’ & lo behold, a Bolly brigade has been announced alongside. Some film around the corner to ‘promote’?
Why can’t we be like any other great city of the world, just enjoy a live concert with a band, be it desi or international? Why make a mela out of everything?
The same shit. The same blind ambition. The same bad taste. The same bore…
The only silver lining in this mediocre fog that engulfs us is that the junta isn’t really buying this crap anymore & thankfully so.
If they were & these YouTube blockbuster (!) songs were truly being viewed by music lovers, why on earth is every radio station turning ‘retro’? These new ‘hits’ should instead give the requisite ratings, no?
(I’ve finally gotten wind of the YouTube numbers & milestone celebration game. Call me slow but der aaye durust aye! )
The lesser said about the success rate of our films is better.
The overall ticket sale numbers are dropping dangerously from what I read & English films dubbed seem to be overtaking local content. Film studios are shutting down.
In all of the above that I rave & rant about, the only people I would like to apologize to are the genuine ‘composers’ of the industry. Call me biased, but these are the people who’ve had a raw deal for quite a while. Slogging for months & years in the studio trenches, dealing with rude illiterate music ‘experts’ reject song after song & music piece after piece & without the requisite language or manners that a creative person should be treated with, while a singer rakes in all the moolah in shows for a fraction of time spent. No residuals, no IP rights, no royalties yet for composers or lyricists in India.
They’re in need to rectify the wrongs by holding a mike on stage, whether or not they can genuinely perform live is kind of understandable..well to a certain extent at least because it would’ve shown more integrity on their part to make music on their own terms, find ways to release & promote it & help create a real music industry rather than be a slave & sub-set to the film industry. If they had all done that & if we had enough singers caring enough to plow their immense earnings back into this scene, we would have had a scene..a worthy scene. Not some besura, pretentious, I drink coffee & I poo kind of rich kid or delusional average kid kind of indie scene or ‘I want to be a film song’ kind of pop release..with a wannabe ‘main bhi actor’ duo romancing, dancing just like they would if they had a film set to go to at that point in time..
The ones I would never apologize to of course are the ‘DJs’, the button pressers & posers of the music world esp in India. Do sweet shit & deserve nothing in my opinion.
Lyricists, writers seem to be kept out of this circus for now…Good? Bad? Well, bad for their bank balance for sure.
Oh yes, Happy Ganesh Celebrations to you all! As you can see the music outside has spread so much joy in my brain & heart that even my pain killers can do sweet shit.

How many of you agree?
