24-Year-Old Guy Is On A Lone Mission To Make Shillong Litter-Free And It’s Commendable

Shillong-Litter-Free

If you take a stroll down the street you live on, what would you spot? Umm, dog-poop, splashed pit, plastic bottles, plastic bags flying around, wrappers lying on the ground and a lot of litter basically. How many of you pick it up and put it in the nearest dustbin you spot? I am not sure, how many would say yes to it. But, this 24-year-old guy hailing from Shillong is doing exactly that. He’s picking every wrapper up, every bottle up and de-littering this beloved city, single-handedly.

Nangjop Thabah, on June 26, decided to take on a solo-cleaning campaign (his own version of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan!) in his neighbourhood Jaiaw Laitdom, along with his young neighbour and a volunteer with his sister documenting the whole process.

He took to Facebook to share his campaign, not with the intention of being applauded and appreciated, but to raise awareness and invite people’s participation.

When the locals saw them de-littering the locality, their reaction was pretty surprising.

Nangjop

“What followed throughout the course of the drive were folks looking along at us with quiet disdain to questions such as “Phi leh aiu?” (What are you doing?) to more ridiculous ones like, “Phi ioh Scheme aiu na ka Sorkar”? (Which Scheme are you getting from the Government?) Apparently, one can’t do a good deed for the local community without an agenda now.

But Nangjop didn’t give up that easily.

“I shall continue this effort tomorrow and the day after that to other neighbourhoods of Shillong with a (cynical) belief that people shall realize the value of cleanliness and that littering simply isn’t cool. Hopefully, this exercise would not prove futile and catches on to other like minded folks.
#NoLitterShillong”

It was the fourth day yesterday and Thabah with his growing gang of volunteers expanded his cleaning territory.

They aspire for a cleaner neighbourhood.

Their #NoLitterShillong #AdoptaNeighbourhood campaigns are making the right waves on the social media platforms.

We are commending their spirit and their efforts! Way to go, Nangjop!
