Sheryl Sandberg Wrote About Late Husband Dave Goldberg & It Is Heartbreakingly Beautiful

Sheryl Sandberg is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. And she is also a technology executive, activist, and author. She also featured in Time 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to TIME magazine.

Life gave her a hard and tragic blow when her husband, Dave Sandberg  died after exercising in a gym on May 1, 2015. Dave Sandberg, CEO of Survey Monkey, aged 47, died after falling from treadmill while exercising in a gym. He sustained a head injury after falling off the treadmill. All of that was so sudden that nobody could comprehend what happened exactly.

After the end of sheloshim (the thirty days mourning period in Judaism) for her beloved husband, Sheryl Sandberg came up with a letter about how she is coping up with the aftermath of that incident. Here are some heart-touching messages that she conveyed in her letter  :

1. She has decided not to take life for granted. She understands that the advice her childhood friend gave makes so much sense now: “Let me not die while I am still alive”. Because life is too short and you never know when the rug under your feet will be pulled off!

2. She is smart enough to figure out that she has two life choices: either to succumb to that void left because of her husband or to appreciate little things in her life. And, needless to say, she chooses life and its meaning.

3. She also philosophizes, in a brutally honest way, that sometimes, hope is not the ultimate thing you can offer to a person who is in agony. Or, the one who is suffering from a pain. Sometimes, you have to face the life with bare-faced truth. And that, it’s okay to be not okay.

4. She is also angry. Angry because, she still had hopes while she was in the ambulance with her husband. Hoping that he would live again. She feels angry that people could have made way for the ambulance. If only…

5. She brings out the irony of life in a subtle way. She points out that people all over the world, are so busy planning for the future that they forget to appreciate their present. Everything is short-lived, she observes. She wants to live happily for her children, who remind her of her husband while missing Dave.

6. Moreover, she is thankful for all the people who supported her during this tough phase of her family’s life. All of the people who have expressed sympathy and reached out.

Her full letter is worth a read.
