It’s already 2017 but something in the air is reverting us to age-old times of regression and oppression. It is misogyny, you smell! While Bengaluru is still under the shock and garb of its ‘night of shame‘ (the same night where innumerable women were assaulted, groped and heckled on crowded streets) our elected representatives are busy making sexist headlines.
After Bengaluru Home Minister, G Parameshwara, another from the chair of power has followed suit and has denounced women (and their attire), the victims, as the reason responsible for such atrocities.
Samajwadi Party leader from Maharashtra and actress Ayesha Takia’s father-in-law, Abu Asim Azmi has reacted to assault on women on the New Year’s Eve in Bengaluru by comparing them to SUGAR that attracts ANTS.
He, who has earlier said that raped women should be hanged, went to say,
“If my sister is going outside home after sunset with a boy to celebrate New Year, it cannot be expected that people will behave with her in a respectable manner.”
Needless to say, the sexist comments have raised an uproar condemning the way politicians don’t think twice before saying insensitive and outrageous stuff.
Twitter was the mouthpiece where most of the outrage was vouched. Even celebrities took to their handles to express shame and disgust.
1. Couldn’t agree more, Farhan
Women should not dress like westerners b'coz men dressed like westerners are molesters, says the man in the shirt.#oxy(deprived)morons

2. Boils our blood, Varun!

3. Vishal Dadlani made it clear!
What they were wearing/drinking/whom they were with is no-one's business. Govt/Police shd ensure women's safety, regardless. #BengaluruShame

4. Exactly, Shekar! Until when?
When will it stop? How long will our society go on blaming women for assaults upon them? #Bengalurushame
— Shekhar Kapur (@shekharkapur) January 3, 2017
5. Richa didn’t mince words either!
Women get molested irrespective of what they wear, where they are. Women in India are not safe,EVEN AT HOME. #Bengalurushame
— TheRichaChadha (@RichaChadha) January 3, 2017
We can't be a superpower if 50% of the population are treated like 2nd class citizens. DISGUSTING. Misogyny must end. #Bengalurushame

7. Even Salman’s father, Salim Khan urged the PM to address the issue!

— Salim Khan (@luvsalimkhan) January 3, 2017
Narendrabhai the power of the youth is double edged it can go either way. You need to address it immediately @narendramodi @PMOIndia

8. WORD
Stop teaching your daughters how to defend themselves. Instead, teach your sons how to respect & value a woman. #BengaluruShame

9. Rahul, we can only hope!
Misogyny, gender violence aren't city specific. Enforcing the law shouldn't either. Here's hoping Bangalore sets the right example. https://t.co/gettRGKKhd
— Rahul Bose (@RahulBose1) January 4, 2017
10. Such is the state, Swara!
Shameful that law breakers, law makers & law keepers are united in the warped logic tht women invite rape/molestation #bangalore #india 2/2
— Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) January 3, 2017
The minister, however, clarified himself and tweeted,Â
I strongly codemn the Banglore Incident.I appeal to the media not to quote me out of context. My opinion is we should follow our culture.
— Abu Asim Azmi (@abuasimazmi) January 3, 2017
But will this undo the incident? When will it stop? Actually, the question of the hour is, will it ever?!
