“These Things Happen,” Says Bengaluru Home Minister After Girls Were Mass Molested On NYE

New Year spirits went out of the window when reports of mass molestations, in the crowded streets of Bengaluru, amidst a sea of policemen, surfaced. While the blame game has just begun, we are still just sorry and dismayed at the sad state of women’s safety in a country like ours.

Although the centre and its officials have come out and condemned the night of shame, ministers from Bengaluru have a different story to tale to tell.

Bengaluru Home Minister G Parameshwara, when faced with questions and an angry mob after several women were allegedly molested and heckled on New Year’s eve, blamed western mindset and dressing, but had no apology to offer.

In events like New Year or Christmas Day, there are women who are harassed or treated badly. We take precautionary measures. But unfortunately, on days like New Year, a large number of youngsters gather on Brigade Road, Commercial Street and MG Road. And youngsters are almost like westerners. They try to copy the west, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing. So some disturbance, some girls are harassed, these kinds of things do happen.”

Needless to say, the statement drew a lot of flak when the minister blamed dressing sense instead of lack of administration. However, he asserted that 25 CCTV cameras that were installed in the area will be examined by the police for the footage.

Taking strong offence to this, National Commission for Women chairperson, Lalitha Kumaramangalam has raised objections to the remarks and sought the minister’s resignation and apology to the women of the country.

“Such remarks from the Home Minister is unacceptable and regrettable. I want to ask this Minister are Indian men so pathetic and weak that when they see a woman in Western clothes on a day of revelry, they get out of control?

When will the Indian men learn to respect women?”

While there is still no case registered because nobody filed a complaint, the women who were groped and pawed stand sans justice.
