The larger Hindi film audience learnt about Pamela Chopra and her contribution towards Yash Raj Films far too late. But thankfully, because of the documentary ‘The Romantics’, we now understand Pam’s (as she is popularly called) influence over not just Yash Chopra and his success, but even the scripts and female characters of his films.
Pamela Chopra – a singer, producer, scriptwriter, wife of the late Yash Chopra and mother of Aditya and Uday Chopra, passed away today morning, April 20. She was 85 years old and for the past 15 days had been admitted at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai and was under ventilation, reported India Today.
Yash and Pamela Chopra had an arranged marriage and tied the knot back in the 1970s. It was as though after his marriage to Pamela, Yash Chopra got a new lease on life. He left being under the shadow of his elder brother BR Chopra and began Yash Raj Films.
Pamela has not just sung several songs from Yash Chopra’s films like Kabhie Kabhie, Lamhe, DDLJ, Darr and Mujhse Dosti Karoge, But had also written the script for Dil Toh Pagal Hai.

She independently produced the 1993 film Aaina. It was under her influence that Yash Chopra was able to write such striking female characters.
A truly significant artist who shaped an entire generation has been lost today. Rest in peace, Ma’am!
