NRI Got His Dog Treated For ₹10,000 In India After French Hospitals Asked For ₹3.2 Lakhs

In the last few years, the medical tourism sector has seen a great boom in India. Thanks to cost-effectiveness and an ample availability of highly qualified doctors and other trained professionals, people from all over the world choose India as their preferred destination to get all sorts of medical services.

Taking the trend to a step further, India is now growing as a favourable location for veterinary tourism as well. Here is the story of an NRI who brought his pet dog to India as the difference in the cost of treatment was enormous.

When Eva, a female Gull Terrier of Sanjeev Kumar Jangwal, an NRI living in France got injured and couldn’t keep her leg on the ground, he took her to the vet. And as it turned out, the problem was not that simple.

The 3 and a half-year-old dog was suffering from anterior cruciate ligament rupture, a kind of knee injury common in football players.

However, when Jangwal learned that the price of the treatment of his dog was about ₹3.22 lakhs (4,500 Euros) in France, he decided to head back to his native country.

“The hospital staff told me that entire cost of the treatment will be 4,500 Euros. As treatment cost was too expensive in Paris, I decided to bring Eva to India.”

Eva was then brought to the doctors at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana, Punjab where she was successfully operated for a meagre sum of ₹800.

While the travel expenses for Eva were between ₹50,000-₹60,000, she received her entire treatment for under ₹10,000 including the costs of imported thread for stitching, medicines, surgery and other expenses.

Dr Arun Anand, associate professor at GADVASU confirmed that the pooch is now getting better.

“The only cure for anterior ligament cruciate rupture was surgery. Stitches have been removed and Eva will be able to walk in 15 days.”

We wish Eva a speedy recovery and a safe trip back home.

The stupendous difference in the cost of treatment in the two nations speaks volumes about the potential of India to become a hub of vet treatment. The government should make efforts to encourage foreigners to visit India and make the process of visiting the country with pets easier to facilitate their treatment.
