There’s Good News For Porn Viewers. It Will Never Be Banned Completely In India

With the ubiquity and easy access of porn these days, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people are beginning to study the effects of it on our sex lives. There have been studies that after watching porn, short term pleasure can cause long term damage. Also, there have been constant remarks from our very own moral police that watching porn is not good and that it is unhealthy. Supreme Court of India has come up with a new verdict regarding that.

Supreme Court has stated that porn cannot be banned completely in India because eroticism is a personal choice.

Yes, you read that right. There will be no restriction placed on the pornographic websites, according to Supreme Court of India. “Such interim orders cannot be passed by this court. Somebody can come to the court and say  ”Look, I am an adult and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room? It is a violation of Article 21 (right to personal liberty) of the Constitution.”  Yes, the issue is serious and some steps need to be taken… the Centre has to take a stand… let us see what stand the Centre will take, ” said HL Dattu, Incumbent Chief Justice of India.

This time, the verdict has been altered. Earlier, the Supreme Court egged on banning the erotic content from the internet.

In August 2014, the Supreme Court bench that was headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha demanded strict laws that were meant to curb the online content. He actually went ahead and said that there should be coordinated efforts between the Department of Telecommunication, Information and Broadcasting Ministry, and the Home Ministry who will look after blocking the content. ”The time has come when the law should be faster than technology. The time has come when there needs to be the synthesis of law, technology and governance to control pornographic material on the internet,” said Lodha, back then.

There were plans that even on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, the content would be controlled.

Well, considering the nonsensical bans in India, this is a much-welcomed move. Because fairly, it is up to an individual whether he wants to watch porn or not.
