PM Modi Sends Rs 50K And A Letter To The Distressed Orphans Who Had Rs 1 Lakh In Old Notes

Death is cruel. It comes unannounced, takes away the most precious ones and shatters you into uncountable pieces.

Suraj and Saloni Banjara were only seven and two, respectively when their father passed away in 2007. In 2013, a man they called ‘uncle’ crushed their mother and a nurse with a car. He ran a car over, again and again on them; till they died. Suraj and Saloni, now 17 and 12 were taken in by shelter.

On March 7, 2017, Suraj visited his mother’s home in Sawarwada, Kota with the authorities and found Rs 96,500 under his mother’s pillow. But they all were in the old denominations of 500 and 1000. As RBI refused to change old notes for the kids, they sought help of PM, Narendra Modi.

Suraj wanted to change the notes and convert them into a fixed deposit for his little sister. The hand-written letter was sent to Mr. Modi on March 25. On Friday, they received a reply from the PM. He sanctioned Rs.50,000 to the brother-sister duo. Here’s an excerpt from Suraja’s letter –

“Please listen to our Mann ki Baat, Modiji. Humare aage peeche koi nahin (We don’t have any relatives)… our father left us when we were young and our mother was murdered. We want to deposit the money back with the government. please help us at the earliest.”

Apart from issuing them the money, months after the deadline, Mr. Modi insured them under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Beema Yojana (PMJJBY).

PM has also sent them a premium of  Rs 1,710 in advance for 5 years. In a letter he wrote to the kids, Modi extended his sympathies for Suraj and Saloni. He also said –

“After knowing about your present state through your letter, I sympathise with you.”

“Although the sanctioned amount and insurance premium amount may not be sufficient for resolution of your problems, but I am sure that such assistance will certainly reduce your problems to some extent.”

It’s heartbreaking what these kids have to go through.

It’s also heartwarming to see that they are getting all the help, they deserve.

All the best Saloni and Suraj. May you only see happier days from now on.
