Mumbai or Bombay, what’s in the name? It’s the emotions that count. And all of us Mumbaikars have a lot of those. We have an emotion for everything, a traffic jam, long lines in government offices and specially public decorum.
We get easily irked by those who claim to be Mumbaikars, but really have just lived in Delhi all their lives and migrated to the great city for jobs/college/to find a life etc. But the best part of the city is, it accepts everyone, yes just about anyone. Whether you live in Sobo or in Chembur, everyone has a little bit of Bombay in them.
And believe me, it stays there forever, making it heartbreakingly hard to leave.
1. Where you are woken up by early morning Namaz and sleep to the sound of a Jagrata in your building.
2. When you enter a local train that literally has people coming out of it’s ears, if you are in anyway injured or sick, they will make space for you, even when there are 12 people on a 6 seater bench.
3. If you have car troubles, you can be rest assured that atleast 5 people will volunteer to push your car/call a mechanic for you/suggest legit solutions and use their ‘contacts’ to help you, even though you are a complete stranger.
4. It’s the one city where ‘Tu janta hai mera baap kaun hai’, will never work in your favour.
5. You’ve once in your life tried speaking in broken marathi to talk to traffic cops.
6. The one city where hail or heat wave, every auto has to go by meter.
7. You’ve bitched about traffic to know exactly where to take your cab/auto from without even glancing at Google Maps.
8. You don’t simply cut a line in Bombay, be prepared for some serious public shaming.
9. You will spot atleast one celebrity in your whole tenure of living in Bombay and start to think it is no big deal.
10. The place where you get Facebook friend requests from your house help’s daughters, where you whatsapp your vegetable vendor and call your ‘gaadi dhonewala’.
11. A place where almost everyone understands and uses Hinglish on an everyday basis.
12. You’ve rolled down the windows on Bandra-Worli sealink to just feel alive.
13. You’ll never find yourself walking alone, anywhere.
14. You will miss the ‘Why Bandra is better than Town’ or vice versa argument.
15. It’s the place where every person has gone to a water body ( marine drive, bandra fort, worli seaface, thane creek etc) to just think about life.
16. With a nightlife that doesn’t really end till breakfast in Ramashray.
17. Where networking happens over beer on unplanned night outs with the randomest people you bump into.
18. And every other person is a creative mind bursting to break free.
19. Where you can get Vada pav, Pav bhaji and even amazing chicken rolls at 2am.
20. You could be the person who blares Honey Singh from your old Honda or a prim cafe visiting, sanitizer using perfectionist and you’ll still find people who you will love you for just who you are.
21. It’s not a ‘dog-eat-dog’ world, it’s a place where people stop to pick you up when you’re down.
As the years go by, Bombay isn’t just a city. It’s home.Â
