Meghalaya IAS Officer Walks 10 Km To Buy Organic Veggies, Carries Them Home In A ‘Kokcheng’

All of us are doing our bit for the environment in one way or another. Some of us are replacing plastic straws with steel ones, some are opting for public transportation over private vehicles and others are travelling on a zero-carbon emissions yacht instead of an aeroplane.

Ram Singh, an IAS officer in Meghalaya, is going the extra mile (quite literally) to live sustainably. He and his family believe that “modern problems require traditional solutions” and make weekly trips to the local market that is 10 km away. They bring back organic produce in a ‘Kokcheng’ (bamboo basket).

Mr. Singh originally hails from Himachal Pradesh and was appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills on December 1, 2017. Ever since then he has ditched plastic and buys locally to support farmers.

The Indian Express quoted him saying, “Many complained that it was difficult to walk carrying loads of vegetables. I had suggested them to carry ‘Kokcheng’ (a local bamboo basket) which would even help fight the plastic menace. But they just laughed it off. So my wife and I headed to the market carrying the bamboo basket which I found to be very helpful in many ways.”

His routine helps promote fitness and reduces pollution in the area. Apart from this, he also takes on social work once a week and highlights all the good things happening in the community like the installation of solar-powered smart classrooms and rainwater harvesting systems in schools. We hope that many more get inspired by him and do whatever they can for the environment.
