Mumbai Woman Drags Man To Court For Calling Her ‘Chammak Challo’. Court Rules In Her Favour.

How often have we heard words like ‘maal,’ ‘bomb,’ or ‘totta’ being used for women? And how often does it go unnoticed? But seems like not anymore. At least for the word ‘chammak challo.’ Thank the legal Gods for this, but now the usage of word ‘chammak challo’ is nothing lesser than a ‘behind-the-bar’ offence.

A woman in Thane dragged a man to court after he addressed her with the word ‘Chammak Challo.’ The man got convicted under the IPC section 509 and was imprisoned till the rising of the court along with a fine of Rs.1.

The incident dates back to January 9, 2009, when the lady was returning from a morning walk with her husband. The complainant’s leg accidentally happened to touch the accused’s dustbin and it fell. The accused assumed the action as deliberate and yelled at the lady addressing her as ‘Chammak Challo.’

The lady was offended by the use of the word and decided to teach the man a lesson. Soon enough, she approached the local police but the cops refused to register an FIR.

Moreover, she even approached the housing society where both the lady and the accused lived, but no action was taken from their side too.

It was then that she decided to resort to legal help. The accused tried to argue with the judge during the trial but it was all in vain as the court had already taken its decision. Here is what the judge said to Times Of India about the whole case,

“The words ‘chammak challo’ are Hindi words, and there are no such words in English. Also, the words are to be understood in Indian society by their use. Generally, they are used to insult a woman. They are not words appreciating a woman. When used, they cause irritation and anger to any woman. Therefore, the words amount to insulting the modesty of a woman, attract section 509 of the IPC.”

We are thankful to the lady for taking the huge step and striking off a word from the ‘eve-teasing dictionary.’ It takes a lot of efforts and bravery to stand against a word that is regarded as ‘cool’ by the society and portrayed through mainstream cinema songs.
