Husband Rides 1,200km On Scooter To Take Pregnant Wife To Exam Centre In MP

Braving rains and bad roads, a Jharkhand man drove over 1,200 km on a two-wheeler to ensure that his pregnant wife could appear for an exam for aspiring teachers in Madhya Pradesh. But how did the tribal couple undertake this arduous journey?

Well, Dhananjay Kumar (27) and his wife Soni Hembram (22), traveled on a scooter covering more than 1,200 km across four states to reach their destination despite a few deterrents, reports TOI. Dhananjay rode from Ganta Tola village in Godda district of Jharkhand to reach the DEd (Diploma in Education) center in Gwalior so that his wife could appear for her exams. Soni, who wants to become a school teacher, needed to give the DEd exam in order to take up teaching jobs.

However, their journey was filled with obstacles. Kumar, who worked as a cook before he lost his job due to the lockdown, said that other means of transport like trains and buses weren’t available and hence they had to travel by their two-wheeler. The couple even had to stay a night each in Muzaffarpur (Bihar) and Lucknow before reaching Gwalior, reports HT.

Kumar was quoted saying,

“If I had hired a taxi for coming to Gwalior, it would have cost Rs 30,000 which was a big amount for me. Whatever little jewellery we have, we mortgaged it to raise Rs 10,000. So far, we have spent Rs 5,000 on our one-way journey and on a room that we have taken on rent in Deendayal Nagar here.”

However, his wife, who is pregnant, was initially reluctant to travel on the scooter. But after seeing her husband’s strong determination, she agreed to the long journey. She was quoted saying, “Earlier I thought that it won’t be possible for me to appear in this examination but after seeing my husband’s determination and courage, I got ready for this long journey. We faced a lot of trouble due to rain. I got a mild fever en route, but now everything is okay.”

After knowing about the couple’s travails, Gwalior collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh asked the district women empowerment officer, Shaleen Sharma, to provide them with immediate assistance. The administration gave them Rs 5,000 and will also pay for their rent and make arrangements for their food. The authorities have also offered to send the couple back to their village safely and special medical attention will be provided for the woman too.

Soni said that she will apply for a teaching job in Jharkhand and she is confident that she will get selected for it. Well, all the best to the determined couple. We’re sure they’ll be successful in everything they do.
