Recently, an Assamese took to social media to write how her job application was rejected by an online portal because of her surname ‘Chutia’. While for the rest of India, ‘Chutia’ is used as a slang, for people of North-East India, ‘Chutia’ is an indigenous community. The incident not just highlighted our lack of awareness of various Indian cultures but also our lack of sensitivity towards people with unfamiliar names.
In a similar incident, people have been trolling Sweden’s ‘Lund University’ for its name. For desi people, ‘Lund’ is a slang, However, in Swedish, ‘Lund’ means ‘green area’. Also, Lund University is one of the world’s top 100 best universities.
The university took to Facebook to address the incessant trolling online. Here’s what they wrote:
Soon, Lund University’s statement went viral and many people online were left embarrassed. Sharing the post, they apologised to the university for being subjected to such deplorable behaviour and slammed fellow citizens for trolling such a prestigious university due to their lack of awareness in the first place.

Poor guys. While desks may continue laughing at the name, @lunduniversity is quite an amazing place. I'll vouch for @andreasmattsson and his team any day. https://t.co/H9X2fonIvj

It’s such a shameful thing to abuse a top university because of its name. Kudos to those who called out the trolls for their behaviour!
