‘Period Pain Is Real’ Women Discuss The Importance Of Menstrual Leaves In India

Menstruation is a biological phenomenon where a woman’s vagina discharges blood every month. Now, while it might seem like an easy process when you read this definition, the problem is there is so much more to periods than just wearing a sanitary napkin. For a few days every month, you may go through both physical and emotional changes like intense cramping, nausea, moodiness, and breast pain.

However, even though periods are a natural occurrence for almost half the population of the world, it is still considered a taboo around the globe. Speaking of which, twitter user Rituparna Chatterjee recently ignited a heated debate on the subject by speaking about ‘period leave’. Sharing her personal experience, she said that women who have unbearable period pains deserve to take a leave from office during their menstruation cycle.

She pointed out how men can’t possibly lead this conversation since they know nothing about it:

She further mentioned how it is difficult to make excuses to take leave during periods:

She also argued that periods can’t be covered under ‘sick leaves’:

When a user pointed out that she should visit a gynaecologist about the pain, she revealed that she had done everything to stop it but nothing helped:

Another user questioned why do women deserve special treatment?

Many people spoke in support of her idea and said women experiencing severe discomfort during periods deserve a leave:

Several others felt that women don’t deserve the additional leave for a biological thing:

While many companies offer menstrual leave, it’s important others follow suit too. What is your thought about a ‘period leave’? Tell us!
