Kumar Sanu On Indian Idol, Artists Lacking ‘Respect’ Today & 90s Music Being Better

A month ago, former Indian Idol winner Abhijeet Sawant had opened up about the show focusing on “fake stories” instead of actual musical talent. Even playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan had revealed that she was asked to “praise” all contestants, which is why she left the show.

And now, Kumar Sanu has opened up about Indian Idol and the recent conversation around it. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the singer said:

“Jitna gossip hoga, utna TRP badhega, samjha karo. Badi baat nahi hai.” (The more the gossip, the better will be the TRP. Please understand. It is no big deal).

When asked about how singers from the current generation are treated differently from his generation, Kumar Sanu expressed that the overall “respect” for singers has decreased.

“Personally, I have always been treated with respect. However, I have seen few things around me. Overall, the respect for singers has gone down. Nowadays, the same song is being sung by many singers and the producers chose one among those voices. I believe that is a disrespect to singers.”

He went on to express that nowadays, music doesn’t have the kind of “soul” it had back then. In his time, singers could sing in their own style. But today, he revealed, they are told to sing a certain way.

“Directors now want us to sing in a certain way while earlier we could sing in our own style. We have become technically upgraded but the soul of yesteryear music is missing. I talk about the 90s, that is missing. So many films were musical hits earlier. Now, the focus and development are on sounds while the soul is missing. I would want it to be a priority that producers maintain the soul of the songs.”
