The death of George Floyd in the U.S. has not just sparked debate regarding police brutality in the west but in our country as well. When a few Bollywood celebrities spoke in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, many Indians questioned them, even condemned them for not speaking up regarding police brutality in our own country which is extremely rampant.
Speaking of which, a video which is going viral on the internet showing how a police constable in Jodhpur is seen kneeling on the neck of a man for not wearing a mask, reports The Indian Express. The video immediately reminds us of the terrible scene of George Floyd being choked do death by the white police officers in Minneapolis.
However, unlike George Floyd, the man pinned down by the constable allegedly turned violent once confronted by the police. The culprit even slapped them, threw punches at them, and threatened them.
“A constable clicked the person’s photo when he was not wearing a mask. And when the constable approached him and inquired why he was not wearing a mask, the person immediately pulled up a mask and threatened them that he will gouge their eyes,” said the Jodhpur (west) DCP, Priti Chandra.
“So, the policemen called for a jeep but before it could arrive, the man started slapping and punching both the constables – there are videos of the same. We have filed an FIR against him and arrested him,” the DCP added.
Chandra also went on to say that it is “embarrassing for the entire society” to watch the police getting “slapped and punched while in uniform”.
“It is natural that the cops will subdue him and not get beaten up,” she said.
