People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti has been elected as the first female chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir and will be officially sworn in on the 4th of April.
The announcement came soon after Mufti was elected as president of the PDP
Party leader Amitabh Mattoo said that he is hopeful that Mufti will bring in “new era of peace and prosperity in the region.” This follows Mufti’s deliberations in arriving to a conclusion regarding her taking office after the death of her father, who was previously the head of the PDP-BJP alliance.
Mehbooba Mufti met with the Prime Minister to seek reassurances regarding her safe transition to office
Seeking multiple confidence building measures with regards to the formation of Government in the critically embroiled state of Jammu & Kashmir, Mufti’s many meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended on the 22nd of March, with her nomination date being decided as the 26th of March.
The alliance had formerly expressed their opinion for scheduling the swearing-in ceremony two days after Mufti’s nomination
Stating that deliberations in an alliance partnership usually take time and assuring that there was no difference of interests, BJP General Secretary issued the following statement:
This is the first time the state will have a female Chief Minister and she will hopefully bring reforms that might work in the state’s favour.
